二、The Path to World Expo -- Introduction to World Expo 2010 Shanghai China and Retrospection of World Expo History
From: http://en.expo2010.cn
After more than 120 days of carefully designing and reviewing, "The Path to World Expo -- Introduction to World Expo 2010 Shanghai China and Retrospection of World Expo History" finally opened. The first stop, in Shanghai, was held in Shanghai Urban Planning Museum. The exhibition space is more than 1,300 square meters.
The exhibition contents are divided into two large sections -- World Expo history and World Expo 2010 Shanghai China. In terms of content design, the organizers took time as axis and story as points to tell the origin, development, use and significance of World Expo as well as the idea and form of Expo Shanghai via simplified and interesting ways in order to inform the public about the preparation of the Expo Shanghai.
"Chinese Expo Connection, Stunning Oriental Red"
Stunning exhibitions often have great ambience as well. The organizers of this tour built large gardening scenes outside the door of Shanghai Urban Planning Museum -- "Chinese Expo Connection, Stunning Oriental Red" -- occupying 150 square meters with 8 meters tall. The organic combination of fifty-six red lanterns, symbolic of 56 minority groups in China, sculpture of Shanghai city flower white magnolia and World Expo logos generates a unique, vivid, and welcoming ambience, reflecting China's determination and passion to hold a great World Expo.
"Road of the City"
The existing "Road of the City" at the entrance of the Shanghai Urban Planning Museum was cleverly used to reflect the development and future of the city, as well as different sorts and characteristics of city life style -- wide or narrow, fast or laid-back. Roads of various materials exactly reflect the footstep of human culture. Road is the initiation of beautiful and vivid cities. The line by Aristotle–People come to city to live, and they live in the city to lead a better life -- inspires people to think in depth about the nature of the city. Such a unique design transformed the abstract subject of "city" into visual experience to make it more detailed while also highlighting the theme of Expo Shanghai -- "Better City, Better Life."
Clocks, Models ad Exhibition Boards to Communicate Basic Information of Expo Shanghai
The first item in the exhibition hall is a large countdown clock, reflecting the short preparation time period to the Expo.
The LED screen, facing the door, is open with footages of party and country leaders' caring lines to the Expo Shanghai. This highlights that it is the country that hosts the Expo Shanghai and the leaders care very much about the preparation work of the Expo Shanghai.
The exhibition takes advantage of existing visual elements in the Shanghai Urban Planning Museum -- the Shanghai Urban Planning sand model in the center of the first floor -- to combine with important elements of Expo Shanghai to reflect the Chinese elements, hosting elements, urban elements and planning elements.
Standing before the sand model is a geological map of Shanghai, communicating two significant information of Expo Shanghai -- the Expo zone is just on the two sides of Shanghai's mother river; the spatial position of Shanghai.
The touring used flashback method, and from bottom up in terms of space, to present from reality to history, from Expo Shanghai to the relationship between China and World Expo and then the 156 years history of World Expo. The exhibition area in the first floor includes preparation information of Expo Shanghai. Exhibiting on the second floor are precious memories of the Expo.
Records of the Expo Shanghai's Preparation Process Presented in 400-square-meter-exhibition area
The exhibition area on the first floor, divided into the east and the west side, is 400 square meters in total and features records of Expo Shanghai's preparation process in the past five years.
The east side includes a planning model of the whole Huangpu River and a model of the Expo zone. Behind the models stand two exhibition boards -- the archived images of Expo zone's original scenes and the zone's controlling regulation images. The strong contrast between the new and the old lets the people to feel that the process of Expo Shanghai reflects exactly the theme -- "Better City, Better Life."
The west side includes two contents. The first item, using the existing sculpture titled "Removal Melody," introduces the Expo's relocation which has become a "people's project." The item also presents the relationship between World Expo and urban construction. The other attractive content lets the visitors to watch the monitoring videos of the World Expo sites in real time through the "global eye" provided by China Telecom.
Also in the west side is the World Expo flag in "Shenzhou VI." Moreover, the industrial sculpture made of mechanic parts from the old factories in the Expo zone will also be displayed to reflect the historical and cultural heritage of Shanghai World Expo.
Partners
The staircase from the first floor to the second is filled with six exhibitions of the six global partners, reflecting their illustration of the World Expo theme as well as their efforts for the World Expo. For example, China Mobile used RFID ticketing system and 2-D code system so that visitors will receive SMS about the exhibition after they send SMS of the ticket code. This is also China Mobile's practice for the World Expo.
On the other side of the staircase presents some awarded works from the "Shanghai International Poster Competition," reflecting attention from the international community.
100-Year of World Expo in 30 Minutes
The total area of the exhibition hall on the second floor is about 800 square meters, divided into four parts -- Expo Shanghai, China and World Expo, the Bureau of International Exhibitions, World Expo History. It is expected to have about 3,000 visitors everyday. Hence, the organizers designed it in such a way that visitors could finish all the contents on the second floor in 30 minutes.
"Expo Shanghai" exhibition area, continuing the contents on the first floor, depicts the preparation work of Expo Shanghai including basic information of World Expo, pavilions, international participation, events, forums, communication and promotion, online Expo, intellectual right protection, market exploration, operation, volunteer, among others. The contents are very detailed. For example, the "basic information" includes the primary information of Expo Shanghai -- explains what World Expo is, the successful application, the organization, the process, the theme illustration, the structure of participation, general planning, transportation, among others. Through these contents, visitors could learn about some primary information about the Shanghai World Expo in a short period of time.
In order to satisfy the visitors' expectation to the pavilions and venues, the exhibition also has a part introducing such kind of information. The visitors will learn about the basic planning and design idea of major pavilions (like Chinese Pavilion, Theme Pavilion, UBPA, Expo Center, etc.). Through these contents, the visitors could imagine how the Shanghai World Expo would be.
As a significant part in the World expo, culture events, forums, communication and promotion, intellectual right protection, market exploration and operation works are also displayed in the exhibition.
"China and Expo" presents the long history of the relationship between China and World Expo. Archived pictures of Chinese items winning in the World Expos are presented so the visitors could see that Chinese contents had been there since the first World Expo in 1851. China has participated more than 10 World Expos after 1949, reflecting the improvement of China's international reputation and achievements from the opening policy. This part of the exhibition shortens the distance between the public to World Expo. The audiences realize that World Expo is not just a western thing.
"Bureau of International Exhibition" exhibition area introduces the information related to BIE, such as the definition, agreement, logo and World Expo application process, etc.
"World Expo History" mainly introduces the history of Expos, presenting that the history of World Expo is close to the industrial culture and people's daily lives. To certain extend, it is the witness of all the exciting inventions and discoveries.
Multimedia Exhibition
The highlight of the second floor is the utilization of multimedia, which makes the whole exhibition fresh and surprising.
Multimedia viewing room is used in "the Expo Shanghai" exhibiting area to play a virtue scene practice of the Expo Shanghai -- "Urban Imagination." Organizers also used the combination of sand model and projection of World Expo Zone model to illustrate the planning of World Expo zone. The planning blueprint presented by multimedia presents the various climates of the zone and makes it easier for the visitors to understand and experience.
A virtual book browsing multimedia installation stands in the middle of "China and World Expo" exhibition area and illustrates historical contents of China and World Expo. The organizers collected large amount of historical information and selected precious archived pictures of China's participation including the original version of books recording the 1851 Exhibition, the pictures and posters of the first World Expo in 1855 in France, posters of Expo 1937 in America and Expo 1933 in France, reflecting the development of World Expos.
The multimedia viewing room with special effect display a delicately produced historical review of World Expo -- "Historical Marks". The visitors will walk along the history following the scenes in the video. World Expo related items are displayed in the center of the exhibition area, such as the model of Chinese pavilion in 1904 Expo, model of the Crystal Palace in 1851 London Expo, model of industrial palace in 1973 Austria Expo, as well as significant invents displayed in past World Expos.
In order to present the stronger inter -- nationalization and unique culture idea of the modern World Expo, the exhibition presents the recent World Expos in a different area. The video facilities including touching interactive screens, projectors and multimedia equipment illustrates Expo Aichi and reflects the forms of modern World Expos. Visitors touch with their own hands and experience the wonder of World Expo.
World Expo History
World Expo stories are told in the“World Expo History”exhibition area through art works and theme sculptures–the story of Edison, Audis, Chinese Wine, Helen Keller, etc. The wonderful moments reflect unforgettable memories of World Expo as well as the close relationship between World Expo and people’s lives as well as the motivation to human culture.
"Wall of the City" and "Gate to the City"
In the exhibition hall on the second floor, there are two unique items -- the "Wall of the City" at the entrance of the second floor and the "Gate to the City" at the exit of the exhibition.
"Wall of the City" is made of three "walls" of ideas. The walls are made of different materials, reflecting the advancement of human culture. Their symbolic meanings are–Human beings installed“walls”one after another while they develop cultures. So the final stage of human culture development is to break the "wall". These three "Walls" -- Athens Charters, Charter of Miachu Picchu, Beijing Charter, -- reflects the problems and difficulties people confront in terms of the subject "city". Where is the solution? Maybe that is what Shanghai World Expo needs to answer.
Near the end of exhibition, "Gate to the City" displays sculptures of Columbus' discovery of the new continent, symbolic of geological discoveries in the 15th century, sculpture of Venus, symbolic of Renaissance in 16th century, sculpture of Newton holding an apple, symbolic of the scientific discovery in 17th century. Those three discoveries prepared for the industrial revolution in the 18th century, which initiated the first World Expo in the 19th century. They are like three keys to the World Expo gate. The exhibition transforms ideas to visual sculptures through small items and makes people expect Expo Shanghai. "Gate to the City," with its unique form, ends the whole exhibition with the meaning and usage of World Expos.
To certain extent, the exhibition itself is a work of the World Expo. The organizers conducted the exhibition using World Expo ideas and presented historical contents using modern World Expo exhibiting methods. The exhibition is full of challenges and innovations, showing that World Expo, marked with human culture, makes the world better.
三、Founder of World Expo Cause of Modern China

Founder of World Expo Cause of Modern China
Chairman MAO Zedong mentioned Four "Can Not Forget" for Chinese industrial development, and one was "can not forget Zhang Jian in aspect of the light industry". Zhang Jian who came from Haimen, Jiangsu Province was a Number One Scholar at the end of the Qing Dynasty. He had been a third-level official for compilation of the Hanlin Academy. At the Jiawu Sea War, the Qing court was defeated and the country was decline increasingly. Zhang Jian was with his heart at the people and went back home after resigning. He aspired to benefit the people in his hometown, taking the responsibility of strengthening the county and saving the people, and aiming at saving the country by devolping industry. And he left his love for this country to the grand land of Yangtze Rive Delta, striving to reduce poverty and stop leakage.
Visit to Osaka: Sight Widened Suddenly
In 1900, Zhang Jian planned a visit to the East, but for some reason, he was not able to embark on journey. In January 1903, south salt ascendant and Jinling Pass Monitor XU Naichang transferred an invitation letter from Japanese consul in Jiangning Tianye Cangtailiang (transliteration) to Zhang Jian, inviting southeast celebrities headed by Zhang Jian to visit the expo held in Osaka, Japan in May 1903.
Aiming at finding out why Japan suddenly became a leading country of East Asia after Meiji Restoration, Zhang Jian took a sea-voyage eastward to Japan on April 27 with the Yinchenqu wine produced by YIsheng Brewing Company founded by him in 1894, arrived in Nagasaki on April 29 and thus began the visit to Japan. During the period of Expo, he had gone to the Expo place for eight times successively to make visits, and inquiries where he thought much and learned a lot.
Osaka Expo covered an area of 600,000 square meters with 90,000 square meters of buildings for exhibitiions. Zhang Jian had never seen such a grand occasion and such numerous visitors before. The Expo showed the outstanding progress of Japan in the aspect of industrial power revolution. At that time, the electricity and electric light were rare in the Qing Empire but very popular in Japan.
Though his Yincheng wine was aromatic and delicious, and it was reviewed favorably and won an award certificate, he was still very disappointed, finding out the gap between the Qing Empire and Europe, America and Japan. The Osaka Expo widened the sight of Zhang Jian and brought him various feelings, which made him become very interested in the world expo and start his relationshipwith the world expo.
Participation in Expo in Milan: Narrow Victory
Brightened by the Osaka Expo, Zhang Jian wrote Application to Nanpi Prime Minister for Suggesting Capital Build Imperial Exhibition Hall and Application to Ministry of Education for building Exhibition Hall as to suggest the Qing Court build an exhibition hall integrating a library, "Beijng firstly applied to build an exhibition hall as to set up an example for other provinces", valuing and promoting to create the world expo cause for the Qing Empire.
Planned and guided by ZHAHNG Qian et al, the Qing Empire attended 1906 Italy Milan Fishing Industry Expo. The exhibition area for Chinese products was not big: 400 square meters for fishing products and 120 square meters for handicraft products. At a result, China won over 100 medals and award certificates. The Yincheng Wine enjoyed a good reputation again due to its unique brewing technique and quality and won the gold award of the expo, which was the first gold medal of Chinese wines in world expos and nine years before the Guizhou Mao Tai wine and the Keya Brandy produced by Yantai ChangYu Group Company Limited won the gold medal in America San Francisco Panama World Expo in 1915.
At that time, the Qing government began to realize that "a rich and strong country is due to the development of its industry and commerce, and the development of the industry and commerce should start from the establishment of an expo by itself." (Be Prudent in Dispatching Officers to American Expo). The Ministry of Commerce formulated and promulgated 20 articles of General Regulation of Attending Overseas Expo, encouraging merchants of various provinces to "choose best products to attend expos actively", aiming at "draw the strong points of others to offset our own weaknesses".
For then on, Chinese merchants collected and prepared products by themselves and attended international expos independently in accordance with the General Regulation of Attending Overseas Expo, ending the situation that the world expos were controlled by overseas customs officers. This was a big change in Chinese expo history, a milestone created largely by Zhang Jian.
Southeast Asia Kangyo: Rehearsal of World Expo
In addition to work on participating in the international expos, Zhang Jian also tried to hold expos in China. And the most representative one was the Southeast Asia Kangyo Expo held in Jiangning, Jiangsu Province. Though the expo was held by Jiangsu Province, it was a national one.
Initially, the expo was held by DUAN Fang, Liang Jiang Governor at that time, after he filed an application to the court in November 1908. However, it was actually planed and organized by the Southeast businessmen with Zhang Jian as a representative. In February, 1902, Zhang Jian established Kangyo Office in Jiangning and the Qing Court formally made an order in August and approved to hold the expo. Sponsorship associations, property associations and production associations of various provinces respectively prepared and selected high quality products and sent them to Jiangning. Zhang Jian was appointed as the examiner in chief of the Kangyo Expo to host the review of the exhibits.
After over one year's preparation, the Kangyo Expo was held in June 1910. China's 22 provinces provided exhibits and businessmen, rich men, political officials visited the expo. The delegations from Southeast countries, America, Britain, Japan and Germany also sent their exhibits to attend the expo. The visitors reached over 300,000 persons. The scale and impact of the Kangyo Expo was not less than that of a world expo and could be considered as a successful rehearsal of the world expo in China.
